Newmarket Hockey Club's junior section continues to grow
There was further evidence earlier this month that junior hockey is continuing to thrive at Newmarket Hockey Club.
It was the club’s turn to host the Cambridge Hockey Tournament at their Leisure Centre base on Exning Road, with clubs from Ely, March and St Neots visiting.
A total of 26 teams at under-8, under-10 and under-13 level were all in action, with Newmarket fielding sides at each of the age groups.
Newmarket’s junior co-ordinator Claire McDonnell said: “It was really pleasing to see so many teams come to the event, plus Newmarket having at least one team at every age group.
“It is really growing year on year at the moment and hopefully that continues.
“When we started the youth section four years ago there was around 20 members, but now we are up to about the 80 mark.
“Friendly tournaments help to keep people interested as it gives them experience of what it is like to play in matches.”
The club is keen to welcome new junior members on board, with training taking place on Sundays at the Leisure Centre from 10am-12pm.
